PORNOGRAPHY AND DEMONISM, Part 2: The Pre-Flood Civilization
Gen. 6:1,2 Now it came to pass when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them, That the sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose
Gen. 6:4,5 There were giants in the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came into the daughters of men and they bore children to them. These were mighty men of old, men of renowned. Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually
Gen. 6:11 The earth was also corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence
There is much speculation on the identity of the sons of God in this passage. The ancient Rabbinical view of Genesis 6, as well as that of early church fathers, is that the sons of God referred to here are fallen angels. As such, this is the view that I shall also take.
** “Sons of God” – B’nai HaElohim. Rabbinical scholars and early church fathers believed them to refer to angels
Let’s start from verses 1 and 2. Here we have a description of how society progressed and how demonic activity infiltrated it. As the chapter opens, we see men and women bearing children and “multiplying upon the face of the earth,” thus living out the commandment God gave Adam in Gen. 1:28, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it.”
But along the way, something changed. As men and women acted in obedience to God’s command, it says that the sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful. The word beautiful here means physically beautiful, lovely to look upon.
From the beginning of time, Satan’s motive has been to corrupt God’s beautiful creation, especially the human race, so these “sons of God” took wives for themselves, all of whom they chose.
Throughout the years, many people have tried to discredit the idea that these sons of God refer to fallen angels. Many believe that this cannot refer to angels because of the passage in
Mt. 22:30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God in heaven
Angels neither marry nor are given in marriage. Notice that the verse does not refer to fallen angels, but to the angels in heaven – the glorified angels who continue to serve before the throne of God. They do not marry. So, then, what of the fallen angels?
Jude 6 describes fallen angels in an entirely different fashion...a group of celestial beings who, in the past, left their own habitation. The word for habitation here is oiketerion, which is also used in 2 Cor. 5:2 in reference to our habitation which is from heaven. It refers to a heavenly body. The verse in Jude 6 refers to those angels who rebelled and were disrobed from their heavenly bodies. From this we learn that fallen angels are not in the same glorified state as heavenly angels. In Scripture, they are seen as disembodied spirits which possess the bodies of living beings, humans.
The sons of God who took wives for themselves were not the glorified angels in heaven but the disembodied spirits of the fallen angels who had left their heavenly habitation – demons. We also know from Scripture that these demons possess the bodies of men (Mt. 12:43). If demons are indeed dispossessed spirits, then it goes without saying that the only way they would be able to interbreed with women would be through a human vessel.
Likewise, they took up a new habitation – the bodies of these men. The text says that they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose. This verse is not talking about conventional marriage. Indeed, it does not appear there was any sanctity of marriage in Noah’s day. The phrase took wives here implies brute force and rape; moreover, these women were already married. They took women who were already married BY FORCE and entered into unholy sexual unions. This fits in perfectly with verse 11, which states that the earth was “filled with violence.” The word “giants” here more than likely means mighty, powerful men. These men were taking these women by force and having sexual relations with them.
According to verse 4, these were the mighty rulers of the age. They were oppressive and cruel kings who practiced violence, and even rape. The passage says that they were in power when the Sons of God came into the daughters of men. What we get from all of this is a disturbing picture of the civilization of that day.
Many scholars agree, as do I, that these “mighty men of renowned” were actually demonized rulers, fully controlled by these unclean spirits. These “sons of God” began to inhabit and empower the rulers of that day, filling them with violence and a spirit of corruption.
They were oppressive dictators who were taking women by force and raping them. They were wicked men who were driven to acts of violence and perversion by the demonic spirits which inhabited them. Furthermore, there is no indication in Scripture that these men resisted these demons. They were in complete cooperation with, and completely controlled by, them. I guess one could say that they had “given themselves over” to Satan.
Satan’s desire was to corrupt the earth to such an extent that God would have to destroy it. The Bible only talks about the powerful men having this sort of demonic influence, but it says that the general population was also irredeemably corrupt. It is safe to say that demonic possession was rampant in that day.
According to the Genesis account, all flesh (speaking of human flesh) had corrupted their way upon the earth, and every intent of the thought of man’s heart was evil continually. There was also violence on the earth. What we get here is a picture of society at this time:
(1) Mankind was fleshly (Gen. 6:3): wholly sensual, overwhelmed by their fleshly lusts and passions, with absolutely no knowledge of or interest in spiritual things (like Esau – they were profane), not retaining God in their knowledge
(2) The earth was filled with violence (Gen. 6:11): Cruelty and oppression
(3) Man’s wickedness was great: rabbah, or “was multiplied.” Wickedness was prevalent, and continued to multiply, increase by increase
(4) All the imaginations of their hearts were evil
According to Genesis 6:3, the LORD said, of the people of that generation, that they were “indeed flesh.” This refers to a heart condition wherein there was absolutely NO knowledge or interest in spiritual things. For this reason, God says that He “will not strive with man forever.” Man had reached a point of such irredeemable carnality that he was now “merely flesh.”
This was the spiritual condition of mankind at the time, irredeemably wicked and corrupt. Demonic activity was rampant upon the earth, and people gave themselves completely over to it. Their leaders practiced oppression and cruelty, and the population as a whole was completely given over to sensuality and lust, completely removed from anything spiritual.
Rape and sexual assault were commonplace, specifically among oppressive rulers of the day. Children were born out of these sexual unions – mighty and powerful men. Wickedness was great, and just continued to multiply on the face of the earth.
People had completely given themselves over to their own lusts; and likewise, to Satan himself. It was total rebellion against God, and complete rejection of the work of the Holy Spirit on the earth. Men were so given over to their own lusts that they could no longer discern the Spirit of God, having completely rejected Him and given themselves over to unclean spirits.
This was the condition of the world in the days of Noah.
